A Global Voice for Local Heroes
Project: ASOLATE
SAWA Theme: Protect & Empower Children
Country: Rwanda
The Association for Youth Literacy and Trades Education (ASOLATE) is making real and lasting progress in improving the lives of the youth of Rwanda by providing education in employable skills. The aftermath of the 100 days of genocide in 1994 – in which over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were brutally murdered – has left 810,000 children orphaned and more than 100,000 households run by children according to UNICEF estimates. ASOLATE is making a difference by training former Rwandan child soldiers in: (1) soldering and electrical work, (2) soap, candle, and paint-making, (3) sewing, and (4) project management; skill that will get them employed and able to support themselves and their siblings.
